Our tips for using NiMH Batteries
NiMH is an abbreviation for Nickel Metal Hydride. NiMH batteries are some of the most common rechargeable batteries we see in consumer electronics. Due to its superior chemistry, NiMH batteries have replaced the application of NiCd batteries. Since they don't use cadmium, a toxic chemical when used in battery applications, and don't have the same memory issues that plague NiCD, NiMH is clearly the better choice of the two. Portable high-drain power solutions are one of the most popular in battery applications, so we've rounded up these tips for using NiMH batteries in your projects!
What types of NiMH batteries are available?
We typically see NiMH battery packs consisting of multiple individual cells connected in series (see image above). Unlike LiPO batteries, this is completely safe for NiMH batteries. Each of these individual cells is rated at 1.2V, which means the NiMH battery packs we've seen are rated at multiples of 1.2V. In particular, we offer 1.2, 2.4, 3.6, 4.8, 6.0, 7.2 and 8.4 volt battery packs.
The idea behind the envelope calculation is that the voltage of the battery itself comes from the difference in chemical potential between the internal electrodes. This means that each NiMH cell is rated at 1.2V, regardless of the cell's physical size. The physical size of the battery does indicate the capacity of the battery. Generally speaking, the larger the battery, the larger the mAh of the battery.

Advantages of NiMH batteries
Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries have been popular since the late 1980s. Steady improvements in performance make this chemistry an excellent choice for small, lightweight, portable and handheld battery pack and battery pack applications.
One of the advantages of NiMH battery packs and components is that there are no recycling issues, 30% to 40% more capacity than NiCd batteries of the same size, less memory effect than NiCd batteries, and competitive prices (especially with compared to Li-ion).
Best Practices for Charging NiMH Batteries
Like NiCds, nickel metal hydride prefers constant current charging. Standard charge is also 14 hours C/10 and should have an expiration timer. NiMH batteries can be charged in as little as an hour with dT/dt (delta temperature ¸ delta time) or peak voltage detection terminated; a timer should be used as a backup if other methods fail to activate.

As we mentioned above, NiMH batteries are great for short-term (<30 days) high-power usage. Some of the consumer applications we see include digital cameras, communications equipment, personal grooming devices, and laptop batteries
Subsequently, what should you not use NiMH batteries for?
NiMH batteries do have several drawbacks, the main one being that they self-discharge. When the battery is not in use, it slowly drains and if left for long enough, your battery can be permanently damaged. A rough estimate of NiMH battery power consumption is that 20% of the battery will be depleted within the first 24 hours after charging, and an additional 10% every 30 days thereafter.
How many times can NiMH batteries be charged?
Typically, we expect 2000 charge/discharge cycles for a standard NiMH battery, but your mileage may vary. This is because every battery is different. Battery usage may also determine the number of cycles the battery can be used for. All in all, 2000 (or about) cycles of the battery is quite a lot for a rechargeable battery!
Precautions for charging NiMH batteries?
To protect the life of your battery, you should keep a few things in mind:
Trickle charging is the safest way you can charge your battery. To do this, make sure to charge at the lowest rate possible to keep the total charge time under 20 hours, and remove the battery at this point. This method essentially charges the battery at a rate that doesn't overcharge but keeps it topped up.
Do not overcharge NiMH batteries. In short, this means that once the battery is fully charged, you stop charging. There are a few ways to know when the battery is fully charged, but it's best to let the battery charger handle it. Newer battery chargers are "smart" and can detect small changes in battery voltage/temperature, which will indicate that the battery is fully charged.
NiMH battery memory?
Initially, there were widespread problems with nickel-based batteries and memory. Essentially, if you don't fully drain the battery before charging, you will lose some of the battery capacity. Over time, this will make your battery a big chemical-filled paper weight. The NiMH batteries we see today don't have these problems, although you can still see the same effect if you don't fully discharge the battery every time you use it. Newer NiMH can be restored by "exercising" the battery (charging and discharging the battery fully a few times).
Replacing alkaline batteries with NiMH batteries?
It's totally fine! If you're burning a lot of AA batteries, you can pick up some NiMH batteries to replace them. The voltage difference (alkaline 1.5v, NiMH 1.2V) is offset by the voltage drop experienced by alkaline batteries during use.
