The NiMh battery is a kind of secondary battery similar to the NiCd battery. It can be recharged and can be used many times. Therefore, the NiMH battery is a kind of more environmental friendly battery with good performance when compared with the traditional alkaline battery or the NiCd battery, making it well-received in the market. For example, NiMH batteries are widely used in digital cameras, cellular phones, camcorders, shavers, transceivers, and other electronic devices.

The positive electrode of NiMH battery is Ni(OH)2 (also called nickel-oxide hydroxide), and the negative electrode of the NiMH battery is made from a hydrogen-absorbing alloy.

The conception of the NiMh battery was first raised in the 1970s, with a great deal of research concentrated in the 1980s and industrial production first appearing in the early 1990s. NiMH batteries were initially an alternative to NiCad batteries, avoiding using the toxic element ‘cadmium’ and eliminating the environmental hazards caused by the heavy metals in our daily life. NiMH batteries were first industrialized in Japan, the United States, Germany, and other countries.

On the other hand, with the development of the Lithium Ion battery and other new technologies in the green energy area, the NiMH battery gradually lost weight in some areas for its disadvantages. Early NiMH batteries were mainly used to replace NiCd batteries in notebook computers and cell phones. Since the commercialization of Li-ion batteries in the 1990s, Li-ion batteries have replaced NiMH batteries, and they have captured the market of portable electronic devices for more than ten years since then.
However, NiMH technology has not remained static in contrast to consumer applications, where Lithium-ion has largely replaced NiMH. NiMH technology takes place in automotive applications. It is the preferred technology for supplying electricity to HEVs and has amassed over 10 years of trouble-free use. As a result, it can last the entire life of the vehicle. The operational temperature range for NiMH cells has been increased to nearly 100 °C (-30 °C to + 75 °C), which is far higher than the temperature range currently possible for Lithium cells. This makes NiMH technology excellent for usage in automobiles. The active ingredients in NiMH are naturally safer than those in Lithium-based cells, and NiMH batteries don't experience memory effects. NiMH batteries don't require the battery management systems (BMS) required by lithium batteries, and they can withstand the high power levels characteristic of EV applications and have active chemicals that are fundamentally safer than those found in Lithium-based cells. In the near future, the NiMH battery will play an important role in the EV area for those advantages.

Electrochemistry of the NiMH Battery

NiMH battery works on the principle based on the absorption, release, and transport of Hydrogen within the two electrodes.

Positive electrode:
Ni(OH)2+OH-=NiOOH+H2O+e-
Negative electrode:
M+H2O+e-=MHab+OH-
Overall reaction:
Ni(OH)2+M=NiOOH+MH
These reactions are reversible during charging, and the equations will flow from right to left.

Applications of the NiMH Battery

NiMH batteries are widely used in the fields of power tools, digital cameras, electric vehicles, and other devices. Besides that, NiMH batteries have excellent low temperature performance and are also suitable for high current discharge, so they are often assembled into NiMH battery packs to meet the needs of portable electronic devices, like the portable printers, power tools, digital products, and electric toys, etc.

The combined characteristics of NiMH batteries, such as high energy density, high power and no pollution, also make them suitable for use as power batteries, and some NiMH battery factories have used them to develop NiMH battery uses for EVs, electric motorcycles and electric bicycles. This feature has also been extended to the military, with applications in communications backup power, space technology, robotics, and submarines.

Use and Maintenance of NiMH Batteries

NiMH batteries should be used with attention to maintenance.
Avoid overcharging in the process of use. Within the cycle life, the use process should not be overcharged because overcharging is likely to make the positive and negative electrodes swell, causing the active material to fall off and the diaphragm to be damaged, the conductive network to be destroyed, and the battery ohmic polarization to become large.
