Lithium VS Nimh Battery Packs
Custom rechargeable battery packs using lithium cells can provide both high voltage and excellent capacity, resulting in an extraordinary high-energy density. Many applications, such as cell phones, medical devices, electric vehicles, and others require such a high-energy density that only lithium chemistry will do. However, for many of the applications that we see, custom Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery packs are more cost effective to design and manufacture and do not come with all the potential hazards associated with lithium products.
NiMH batteries have been around since the early 1970s. The technology has been driven by its high-energy density (vs NiCd and Lead Acid), being environmentally friendly, good cycle life performance, and with having a good safety and reliability record. And while NiMH battery packs don't need the complex BMS (battery management system) essential with lithium batteries, we do design and manufacture BMS systems for NiMH packs that help the battery pack last long and communicate with the customer’s device in order to provide the same information as a complex lithium pack.

The chemical reaction at the positive electrode is similar to that of the nickel–cadmium cell (NiCd), with both using nickel oxide hydroxide (NiOOH). However, the negative electrodes use a hydrogen-absorbing alloy instead of cadmium.

For new NiMH batteries, it is necessary to cycle them three to five times before they reach peak performance. Battery cycling can be achieved simply by using the batteries and recharging them or using the charger's built-in conditioner.
Insert your NiMH batteries into their charger and allow them to charge completely. The safest thing to do is let them charge overnight so you know they have fully and completely charged. Install the batteries into any device or gadget and let it run until the batteries fully discharge.
Most applications with high energy consumption and demands are where NiMH battery packs excel. They are also suitable for applications as backup power sources, where NiMH batteries have a BMS to control charging and discharging to increase the life of the battery pack.
The main gases released by NiMH batteries when they are overcharged or overdischarged are hydrogen and oxygen. The battery case should not be airtight and should be strategically ventilated. Isolation of the battery from heat-generating components and ventilation around the battery will also reduce thermal stress on the battery and simplify the design of a proper charging system.
